Our Tips for an Organised Christmas Kitchen

For many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It's where we gather to cook, eat and socialise. So it's no surprise that when Christmas comes around, the kitchen is often the busiest room in the house. If you're expecting guests, or just want to enjoy a stress-free festive period, then it's worth taking some time to get your kitchen organised. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

Create a Meal Plan

Planning out your holiday meals in advance will save you time and hassle in the long run. Decide what you’re going to make and compile a list of all the ingredients you’ll need. This will help you avoid last-minute trips to the shops and eliminate unnecessary clutter in your kitchen.

Having everything written down will help you stay on track too (and avoid any last-minute scrambling).

Declutter shelves, cupboards, and countertops

Take some time to declutter your countertops and your cupboards as this will give you more room to work and make it easier to find what you need.

A cluttered countertop can make cooking and preparing food more difficult (and dangerous). So, designate a specific spot for holiday baking supplies, like flour, sugar, etc., and make sure to put them away when you’re finished using them.

You'll need to make way for all of those lovely Christmas treats that you're going to buy, so clear out your cupboards and use up any food that is near its best-before date, or donate it to your local food bank if it's still in good condition.

Clear and clean out your fridge.

It’s easy to overfill your fridge, especially at Christmas time when everything in the shops looks tempting! But items get pushed to the back of the fridge and are often forgotten because you can’t see them, so you end up throwing them out.  This is a waste of food and money!

So, start off by making a list of what you have. Check expiration dates and following the Food Standards Agency guidelines throw out anything that's past its use-by date, especially meat products.

Next, move everything to one side so you can easily see what needs to be used up first. Best-before dates on food labels relate to food quality, so you can sniff, taste, and smell the food to see if it's past its best and if you need to discard of it. There are so many yummy recipes out there that you can make using up leftovers or food that is about to expire, so make a plan for how to use yours.

Now is a good time to clean the fridge, too. Wipe down shelves using hot, soapy water or a kitchen disinfectant spray and get rid of any spills or crumbs.

Don't forget to 'do your bit' to help the planet and recycle as much packaging as possible when cleaning out your fridge and kitchen cupboards.

Stay organised as you cook

Be sure to clean up as you go when you're preparing and cooking each dish, as this will prevent a big mess at the end of the day and leave you more time to enjoy your holiday feast!

Ask everyone to muck in and help clean up so you can spend more time enjoying the meal time without worrying about the kitchen chores.

How to create better storage in your Kitchen

If your kitchen is cluttered and cramped, it's time for a storage makeover. A simple and inexpensive option is to install shelves or racks on the inside of cupboard doors. This is a great way to store things like spices, oils, and herbs which are often used but don't take up much space. Another idea is to use wire baskets or hooks to store items like pans, pots, and utensils which are often used but can be difficult to store neatly.

Make use of the space under your sink wisely. Installing a sliding organizer will make better use of the limited space under your sink and it will give you easy access to all of your cleaning supplies and allow you to keep them organised and out of the way.

Get creative with wall storage by installing shelves or hooks for hanging pots, pans, glasses, and kitchen utensils. You'll be surprised at how much space this will free up in your cupboards and on your countertops.

Use magnetic strips to store knives and other metal utensils. This is a great way to keep sharp objects out of reach of children while still keeping them within easy reach when you need them.
